Techno legends Slam deliver their third EP in twelve months with another heavyweight contribution to the Swedish imprint. 'Crowded Room' and its combination of a tight melodic loop, break-driven drums and snare-roll drops evokes a mid-nineties techno feel yet retains the sleek, rounded and future-focussed feel that has characterised their productions of late. Its counterpart, 'Night Train', balances old school references with modern techniques too but does so in distinctly moodier fashion. From the synthesized locomotive sounds to the rhythmic clunk of the toms there's a playful darkness running throughout and it works excellently.

The Summer of 2011 has been a vintage season for Drumcode with tracks and remixes from Joseph Capriati, Skudge, Alan Fitzpatrick, Gary Beck and Adam Beyer ticking all of the right boxes. Drumcode family members and bona-fide techno legends Slam end the summer with Area51 a two track release which sees the Glaswegian duo turn the sort of scintillating dancefloor burners that has made them what they are. Area51 leads the charge with a hypnotic urgency. A lazily delayed stab triggers every bar while, by contrast, an incredibly tight drumtrack and gluey bass forces things forward. Very little is done to detract from this brilliantly balanced combination but as youd expect from veteran producers theres perfectly timed drops, flourishes and bursts of energy that take the track to the next level. The tone of B-side track Distant Voice is decidedly more sinister than Area51 and as a result, is the perfect counterpart. A ponderous bassline draws focus with its moody/funky counterpoint while piercing vocal stabs drive the cut aggressively. Holding the mood are background atmospherics that are as thunderous as they are subtly applied. As Slam continue their integral involvement with Drumcode theres a sense that theyre flexing muscle musically and the results are superb.

The continued rise of Alan Fitzpatrick is the biggest story in UK techno right now. Having made their debut on Drumcode with the 'Maffaking EP' just a few months back, Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle return in September with 'Cacophony'. It's practically impossible to impart any new knowledge on Slam to fans of techno, such is the widespread respect and admiration for the Glasgow duo. Slam have done it all; from creating acid house anthems, curating the finest line ups for their legendary Pressure parties and championing quality music everywhere they go, theyre a dance music institution. Despite their national treasure status, McMillan and Meikle continue to be at the forefront of electronic music as this latest outing of three tracks shows. From the rising/falling melody and steady climbing intensity, title track 'Cacophony' leads the way nicely into an EP of usual Drumcode strength. It's a nagging melody which characterises Souvenir too. Rolling out across the seven and half minute cut, this unrelenting melody creates an incredibly forceful vibe and it's to Slam's credit that they let it continue with just minor percussive changes underneath. Finally, the wavy funk and warm key licks of 'The Strip' close the EP with a blast of swinging groove that employs a more playful vibe. Slam and Drumcode is a brilliant pairing so 'Cacophony' is a must
